Light Lane

A friend sent me a blog posting from GOOD Magazine about a brilliant idea: a bike lane that moves with you. I've often been annoyed with bike lanes that run adjacent to busy roads, which are frightening and seem to be a token of painted asphalt that isn't functional, yet boosts the town's "bikability" with some faulty rating system. Whereas small, quiet roads, where bikes are lawfully allowed have no signage to communicate cyclists' rights to travel them. A horn blows that the person in the huge steel and glass bubble has no idea how frighteningly loud and alarming it is. The person in the motorized vehicle believes that bikes only belong in a bike lane. Meanwhile, the cyclist is shaken up by the sudden loud noise and becomes agitated, in turn, and may or may not yell at the car or bang their fists on it. I have done this, and I won't even say that I'm "guilty" for doing it. Perhaps in order to receive a driver's license, each person must attempt to balance on two wheels while avoiding pedestrians, small animals, potholes, puddles, and SUVs while having a huge horn blown in your ear and maybe somebody in a passing car yelling at you for being on a road that you have every right to travel. It's enough to shake up anybody.
